GPs, practice nurses, primary-care colleagues, and other referring clinicians can refer a patient for private breast assessment with Dr Tsang-Wright, FRCS (Gen Surg), GMC 4549831. NHS 2-week-wait vs private referral?

Use the right pathway. Suspected cancer on NG12 criteria should follow your local 2-week-wait route. Private assessment is for referrals where private care is appropriate — including second opinion, faster diagnostic access, or insurer-funded assessment — without replacing urgent NHS pathways.

What goes in the letter?

Identifiers, story, imaging, question. Include patient details, presenting complaint, examination findings, prior imaging with dates, and a clear clinical question. Insurer membership and pre-authorisation references when applicable.

Criteria Referral criteria and letter content

Private referral is appropriate for new breast symptoms, family-history assessment, second opinion on diagnosis or treatment plan, and risk-reducing surgery discussions where the patient chooses private care. When NG12 or local 2-week-wait criteria are met, the NHS urgent pathway remains the default for suspected cancer.

Practice Clinics, MDT, and referrer support

Clinics run at Chelsea (Fridays), Harley Street (Thursdays), and Buckinghamshire / Great Missenden (Tuesday evenings), with periodic appointments on other days when arranged in advance. Complex cases are discussed at multidisciplinary team meetings in line with UK specialist breast standards. Dr Tsang-Wright holds a substantive NHS consultant role at the Bucks Breast Unit.

Questions Common referrer questions

Can I refer a patient for private assessment while they remain on an NHS pathway?
Yes. Private assessment does not replace NHS responsibility for 2-week-wait or urgent cancer pathways where those apply. Many patients use private assessment for faster diagnosis or a second opinion while continuing NHS treatment. Include the clinical question and any prior imaging in the referral letter.
What should a referral letter include?
Patient identifiers, presenting complaint and duration, relevant examination findings, prior imaging (with dates and centres), comorbidities, and your clinical question. Which insurers are recognised?
The practice works with major UK private medical insurers including Bupa, AXA Health, Aviva, Vitality, WPA, Cigna, and Allianz. Self-pay is also accepted. Confirm cover and pre-authorisation with the insurer before booking.
